Think Differently!!: Google on Innovation

This blog explores matters relating to the administration of the English Language Program at International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan. In particular, it gives the thoughts and musings of the ELP Director on what it is like to be in that position.

Hi Bill,
ReplyDeleteI am glad you included that link to Google on Innovation on your blog. For us in the ELP, I think we could benefit from embracing at least the following notions:
# Innovation not instant perfection (get something out there, get feedback, and iterate quickly and often)
# Data is apolitical (use data based decision making)
# Creativity loves Constraints
# Users not money
# Don’t kill projects, morph them# Innovation not instant perfection (get something out there, get feedback, and iterate quickly and often)

Thanks, Ken. I agree.

Hi Bill,
ReplyDeleteSo, do you think Google would be where it is now if all decisions went through the lengthy multiple committee process and hierarchical approval process that we have at ICU?
Dear Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point. I don't actually know what kind of hierarchical approval process Google uses. They seem to encourage bottom-up idea generation for innovation, but I wonder how they choose among the ideas.
